EMPD officers managed to corner the suspects on the N12 in Alberton where a shootout broke out.

Four suspects have been killed in a shootout after robbing a liquor store in Ekurhuleni.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) said they received information about the business robbery on Kritzinger Avenue in Verwoerd Park Alberton.

It is alleged that a group of eight suspects stormed into the Dog Box Liquor store, pointing firearms at staff and demanding cash.

Robbery

According to the EMPD, the suspects stole R5 000 and stock (Bottles of whiskey) worth R40 000 and fled the scene in a white Suzuki and a Silver Renault Triber.

The EMPD said officers managed to corner the suspects on the N12 West Voortrekker in the Alberton area on Monday, where a shootout broke out.

Shootout

“Officers acted on the information as they proceeded to the identified location and spotted a security vehicle giving chase on N3 North. The officers joined in as a chase ensued, leading up to N12 West at Eland’s interchange, where the suspect started opening fire at police.

“Police officers retaliated, leaving four suspects fatally wounded and one injured during the shootout who was transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital under police supervision. Officers also uncovered three firearms, a revolver and two 9 mm pistols with serial numbers intact with a Linden CAS number,” the EMPD said.

The EMPD has commended the collaboration with other law enforcement agencies to combat crime in the City of Ekurhuleni by bringing lawbreakers to book and facing the full might of the law.
