With media reports suggesting that Marumo Gallants players have stayed away from training this week in protest over bonuses, the club has cleared the air.

Gallants have an important Caf Confederation Cup second leg semi-final date against Tanzania’s Young Africans on Wednesday.

But the news of a stay away have come at the time when the team needs a big performance to overcome a 2-0 deficit from the first leg.

The club has meanwhile cleared the air, refuting the allegations and setting the record straight.

“In response to media statements being circulated regarding outstanding bonuses being owed to Marumo Gallants players, the club would like to confirm that:

“One, there are no outstanding bonuses owed or due to any Marumo Gallants players. Two, there are no outstanding salary payments owed or due to any Marumo Gallants players,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

“Performance bonuses and other payouts are done at the discretion of club management based on several factors.

“The previous issuing of various bonuses does not guarantee the delivery or timing of future bonuses.

“Cup qualifying bonuses and other payments issued to the club form part of the financial management of the club.”

Gallants claim that the reports are disturbing the focus in the team ahead of their crucial games which determine their future in both the Confederation Cup and domestic leabue.

“Demands by players for specific bonus amounts to be paid at specific points in time are unfounded and damaging to the club, particularly ahead of important matches.

“The focus of the club is on the upcoming matches, including the Caf Confederation Cup second leg semi-final tomorrow.

“And we hope that the team will continue with the great performance shown throughout the competition.”

Gallants are also in the relegation zone in the DStv Premiership and will need a big win in their last game against Swallows on Saturday afternoon to be safe.

But while the side, who recently relocated to Bloemfontein have struggled in the domestic league, they have done amazingly well in the continental competition.
