Firefighters from the Garden Route region of the Western Cape have once again excelled at this year’s Toughest Firefighter Alive South Africa contest. The event, which drew a record number of over 400 firefighters from around the country, was held in Mossel Bay for the third consecutive year.
The competition is the ultimate test of a firefighter’s endurance and skill. For the 7th year in a row, a Garden Route District Municipality firefighters took the crown and was named South Africa’s toughest firefighters.
Senior firefighter, Amile Conrad, along with hundreds of other competitors from across the country, were put through their paces.
Last month, Conrad took bronze in his category at the World Firefighter Games in Denmark.
He competed against 300 of the toughest opponents from across the globe. Conrad says fitness is key in his profession.
“With the toughest firefighter especially, it’s such a high intensity, especially for us doing it competitively. You push yourself to the red and then there’s an element of recovering and so on. So that comes to play in real life as well because our environment is unfamiliar, you don’t know what to expect, we don’t know how long you going to fight, you don’t know if you going to fight for your own life or someone else’s life. So, physical fitness to me is the most important component to any first responder or firefighter.
