The provincial health department noted that the extension was due to a high demand and those who have missed the due date.

The Gauteng Department of Health has extended the registration for ex-mine workers to receive social security benefits for work-related illnesses.

The department on 23 March 2025 announced its collaboration with the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases (MBOD) in introducing a programme to help ex-mine workers access unclaimed benefits.

The initial registeration period was from 24 March until 4 April 2025. However, the department on Monday stated an extension until 11 April 2025.

Ex-miners registered

The provincial health department noted that the extension was due to high demand and to accommodate those who had missed the due date.

“So far, over 7 000 ex-mine workers and their beneficiaries were successfully registered during the first two weeks,” it said.

The remaining ex-miners are encouraged to register during weekdays between 8 am to 3 pm at the following venues:

  • Khutsong Ext 4 Multi-Purpose Civic Centre,
  • Molatlhegi Hall in Kokosi,
  • Ramosa Hall in Mohlakeng,
  • Chief Mogale Hall in Kagiso,
  • Carletonville Civic Centre

Registration requirements

According to the department, the initiative aims to assist those suffering from work-related illnesses and ensure that families of deceased miners can also claim any outstanding funds.

The former miners will undergo free medical screenings during registration within the given dates.

To register, the former workers should bring identification documents, such as the Makhulu-skop (mineworker’s identity card), national ID, and any relevant paperwork from their mining companies.

“Those deemed eligible for social security benefits will be contacted directly by MBOD for further assistance in submitting claims for work-related illnesses and possible provident/pension funds,” the department said.

Contact information

Alternatively, the self-registration portal is accessible on the ex-mine website.

For more details on eligibility and the registration process, ex-mine workers and their families can contact the MBOD Call Centre at 080 1000 240.

“This programme also ensures the department’s commitment to providing access to healthcare to vulnerable groups, ensuring that those who contributed to the economy through mining are not left behind.”
