Popular South African actress, director, and businesswoman Gugu Gumede has shared her inspiring weight loss transformation with fans, opening up about the personal and physical challenges she faced along the way.
Taking to her social media timeline, Gugu Gumede posted powerful before-and-after photos that highlighted her incredible journey since undergoing vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery in January last year.
“So glad to have made the decision to not give up on myself,” she captioned the post.
Gugu Gumede Lost 30KGs
In May 2023, Gugu returned to her YouTube channel where she candidly revealed her decision to undergo weight loss surgery, saying she had lost 30kg in just four months and was finally ready to share her honest experience.
In the video, Gugu reflected on how her weight gain began after she stopped breastfeeding. She struggled with uncontrolled eating habits, which soon took a toll on her health and well-being.
“I got to this place where I was so unhappy — unhappy with the weight, and with how I felt physically,” she explained. “My feet would hurt, I’d go to bed with my heart pounding, and I was terrified. I had high blood pressure and was at serious risk of becoming a chronic patient.”
Motivated by her health, Gugu chose the gastric sleeve procedure to help reduce her food intake and take control of her life. While she acknowledged that surgery may not be the right choice for everyone battling weight issues, she expressed no regrets about her decision.
“It was tough at first. Two weeks after the surgery, I had a rough few days where I questioned everything. I saw people eating freely on set and knew I’d never be able to binge again,” she recalled. “But then I remembered why I did this. I realised I had given myself a beautiful gift.”
Now, over a year later, Gugu Gumede says she feels healthier, lighter, and more confident. Her blood pressure has returned to normal, and her energy levels have improved significantly.
“I’m so much happier. My health is better. My life has changed.”
