Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Davido teamed up with France’s oldest cognac house, Martell as a Martell Standout Swift to deliver a powerful message to the youth of tomorrow.
According to the brand, the ‘Standout Swift Story’ is “the most recent visual installment of the ongoing partnership, a film that showcases Davido’s audacity and sheds light on what it means to question conventions and blaze a trail for those that follow.”
Last week, the SlikourOnLife team attended the South African launch of Martell Blue Swift and witnessed the unveiling of the alcohol brand’s partnership with Davido at The Leonardo in Sandton.
The Afrobeats icon also took the stage to announce the release of his fourth studio album, ‘Timeless’ which dropped on Friday. The project comprises contributions from SA’s very own Musa Keys, Focalistic, amongst other African artists.
In a sit-down interview with Davido, the endowed singer delved into the topical partnership between himself and Martell and what being a ‘Standout Swift’ means to him. He also spoke on his collaboration with Focalistic and shared his perspective on Amapiano in Nigeria.
Below is the how the discussion went down:
How is the Davido brand aligned with Martell Blue Swift?
I feel like being a Swift Standout, you definitely have got to be about your business, so I feel like that’s where we connect. Also, it’s a very smooth drink, I’m a smooth person you know what I’m saying? It’s nice, it’s sweet, I’m sweet so we match up in a lot of ways (laughs).
You and Focalistic have been teasing music for some time, and now he’s featured on your album, ‘Timeless’. What can we expect from this collaboration?
It’s an amazing record, we took our time. I feel likes it’s gonna be a record that’s gonna be played for years and years to come. So everybody that’s going out to stream, make sure you get ready for some good music.
You’ve dropped some Amapiano songs in the past, how is the genre currently doing in Nigeria?
What!? Nigeria is an Amapiano remixer (laughs). Well yeah we love it man, we love it. Shoutout to people like Foca, Waffles, TxC that we play in Nigeria very very much. So yeah, we mess with it, man, we love it!
