Celebrated South African author Jackie Phamotse has opened up about her experience after completing the first year of her two-year house arrest sentence. Despite the challenges that came with her confinement, she has found growth, purpose, and productivity in the past year.

Phamotse, best known for her book Bare I: The Blesser’s Game, was convicted after a lengthy legal battle with media power couple Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo. The court case, which spanned five years, ended in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court with Phamotse being found guilty on multiple charges.

Her conviction included two counts of crimen injuria, one count of criminal defamation, and one count of contempt of court. The charges stemmed from allegations she made on social media that defamed the Kumalos, leading to legal repercussions.

Adjusting to Life Under House Arrest

Phamotse recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her reflections on the past year. She described the initial struggle of adjusting to life under house arrest, admitting that the first few days were particularly difficult.

“The first days were tough. The feeling of being confined, knowing that my movements were restricted, was overwhelming,” she wrote.

However, as time went on, she found ways to cope, adapt, and even thrive despite the limitations of her situation.

“But as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, I began to find ways to adapt, to cope, and to even thrive,” she shared.

Instead of allowing confinement to break her spirit, Phamotse used the time productively—focusing on writing, studying, and personal development.

A Time of Productivity and Growth

Phamotse revealed that during the past year, she has written two books and continued her university studies. She expressed pride in her ability to stand firm in her work and maintain her integrity.

“I have written two books and I’m completing my university studies. I have stood for my work, and protected it. That’s one thing I am proud of. Standing on my shoulders is our country’s history, and the path I have chosen to take,” she stated.

Beyond her creative accomplishments, Phamotse used the experience to reflect on her personal journey. She described house arrest as both a punishment and a blessing, as it forced her to face her flaws and focus on self-improvement.

“As I look back on this past year, I’m struck by the realisation that house arrest has been both a punishment and a blessing. It’s forced me to confront my flaws, to work on my personal growth, and to develop a deeper appreciation for life. It’s given me the rest I needed,” she admitted.

Despite the restrictions of house arrest, she has remained resilient and optimistic, using this period as a time for introspection and reinvention.
