Jay Jody is well known for being part of the duo group, ‘B3nchmarq’ with ‘Tkay 10Staxx’ before they went solo. Jay Jody has constantly been known for having the hardest raps in every song and this time around he is back with his debut mixtape, ‘Sunset Stories’ which dropped this past Friday.
I took time to listen to the project back and forth just so I can fully understand the body of work as a whole instead of having a singular favourite. In this 12 Track project he features a variety of artists from his blood brother, ‘A-Reece’ to Marcus Harvey, Blxckie and Towdee Mac amongst many.
The mixtape is first opened up by an intro of relaxation as it sets the exact tone the art cover establishes from the birds making sounds to the subtle water moving. This has to be one of the best intros from a mixtape i’ve heard thus far as it allows you to feel at ease from the get go and be in tune with the project’s overall message. You then get a song that I would define as tropical, ‘Don’t Beg For Love’ with Boy Wonder as they address a relationship where two parties want two different things for one another as the other party expects the boyfriend to come crawling for their attention and time whilst love shouldn’t be something you beg for as it is something that someone gives to you genuinely with no expectations.
We are then followed by various songs that are very artistic from my perspective as Jay Jody showcases his musical abilities from singing his hooks to the storytelling of the songs. He breaks down in overall lyrical content that addresses, ‘Joy’, ‘Heartbreak’, ‘The Journey To Self-Discovery’ as well as ‘The Struggles’ and ‘Love’ as a whole for not only his daughter but then for his family and small circle. This is a personal project as it showcases the inner character of Jay Jody that we never knew existed.
This project follows the single he released with A-Reece titled, ‘F*ck The World’ and that single is more or less deemed as the best way of establishing the sound of Jay Jody. ‘Sunset Stories’ is so much more than just a mixtape as it is a walk into the life of Jay Jody as well as a journey of which we are slowly embarking on to see the evolving version of Jay Jody by the day.
I enjoyed this project with no skips as I resonate with the overall message as it allows me to be free mentally and be eased up without the worry of losing balance in life as it is a reminder that life gets better by the day and all you have to do is be alive and present in the moment. My favourite song from the project is ‘If You Got It, You Got It’ as he samples an amazing classic. This took me down memory lane and I hope the project taps deep into your minds and hearts as it did for me.
