Level 2 warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms in five provinces

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with possible heavy downpours over Gauteng, Free State, western parts of Mpumalanga Highveld, western and central parts of the Eastern Cape as well as the eastern parts of the Western Cape on Tuesday.

A yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain has also been issued over the eastern and north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.

Residents in these areas should watch out for localised flooding of susceptible settlements, roads
and low lying bridges.

“Extremely uncomfortable conditions” are expected over the Oudtshoorn Municipality of the Western Cape.

Tuesday’s weather forecast

Gauteng: Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate.

Mpumalanga: Cloudy and cool with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers but isolated in the east.

Limpopo: Cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme south-western parts.

North West: Cloudy and warm with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme west.

Free State: Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape: Morning fog along the coast, otherwise fine and warm to hot but partly cloudy in the east with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly to north-westerly.

Western Cape: Cloudy with morning fog along the west coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm. It will become cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers over the southern parts but scattered in the east.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-westerly along the west and south-west coast otherwise moderate south-westerly. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and hot with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread along the east coast and adjacent interior. The wind along the coast will be moderate easterly, becoming fresh south-westerly by evening.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and hot with widespread showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal: Warm in the east, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly, becoming fresh south of Durban at times. The expected UVB sunburn index: Low.
