Doreen Road near Ruimsig will be partially closed while Johannesburg Roads Agency assess erosion caused by heavy rain.

A key route linking large parts of Roodepoort and Krugersdorp to the rest of Johannesburg was partially closed on Wednesday morning.

The left-hand lane of Doreen Road heading south between Totius Road and Toermalyn Avenue will be closed to traffic while further assessments are done.

The steep pass near the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens is one of only a handful of routes to move from the western edges of the city toward Randburg, Honeydew or Lanseria.

Alternative routes linked to West Rand

Motorists can expect delays when travelling in both directions and are urged to drive with caution when approaching the area or use alternative routes if possible.

The nearest alternatives are the N14 through Krugersdorp or Christiaan De Wet Road near Clearwater Mall, both being more than 5km away.

Erosion and damage to the road

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) states that heavy rainfall has resulted in erosion that has damaged the road surface.

“The ongoing rain has resulted in erosion and damage to the road, necessitating immediate partial closure to ensure public safety,” stated JRA.

“Authorities have cordoned off the affected section, and traffic flow will be reduced while assessments are underway,” JRA stated.

“The city apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation,” the entity concluded.

Hendrik Potgieter Road fears

Rain has also caused mild alarm a few kilometres away along a stretch of road that was closed for over a year.

The south embankment of Hendrik Potgieter Road near Little Falls showed signs of erosion earlier in the week, prompting a visit from officials.

Democratic Alliance member of the provincial legislature Nicole van Dyk attended a site visit of the former construction site on 8 April.

“Talking to residents today, they have highlighted several points along this road where we can see this road starting to give way,” stated Van Dyk, requesting the urgent response of the provincial department.
