Man calls ex-girlfriend over 800 times… Just when you think you have seen it all! A man from Maryland has been accused of cyberstalking his ex-girlfriend by bombarding her with over 800 calls within a span of two days, and he may face years of imprisonment for his actions. Derik Wayne Bowers, aged 44 and residing in Hagerstown, has been charged with one count of cyberstalking by the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia.
According to the prosecutor, Bowers harassed his former partner through text messages, phone calls, and Facebook messages. He allegedly made 815 calls to his ex-girlfriend, who lives in Morgan County, WV, in December 2022. Furthermore, he supposedly sent thousands of text messages over the course of several months and also utilized social media posts to humiliate her and disrupt her career. If found guilty, Bowers could face imprisonment for up to five years.
“Cyberstalking is a pervasive problem that we treat very seriously in West Virginia,” US Attorney William Ihlenfeld said in the official statement.
“I encourage those who are being intimidated online and who suffer substantial emotional distress as a result to file a police report so that wrongdoers may be investigated and held to account.”
The charges come after a man in the UK earlier this month was sentenced to 17 weeks’ imprisonment for harassing a BBC presenter over Facebook.
During her emotional victim statement, presenter Alexis Green said she “can’t remember feeling such a dark time in my life.” “[The stalking] has made me feel less confident in every aspect of my life,” she added.
