The sinkhole formed on Earl Haig Road in Morningside, Durban this morning and an unfortunate taxi driver was its first victim.

The person recording the video below can be heard saying:

“He was driving. You can imagine, suddenly you are just under the road.”

The taxi driver, Mndeni Mvubu, told East Coast Radio he thought “it was an earthquake or something.” Mvubu added:

“The way it happened, I was shocked. I didn’t something like that could happen. I didn’t see anything or any problem with the road.”

“The car just sank.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, a tow truck sent to remove the taxi also fell victim to a second, smaller sinkhole.

True story.

A Durban resident confirmed that a second tow-truck was on the scene to assist the taxi and, well, the first tow truck…

eThekwini municipality responds

Meanwhile, communications head of eThekwini Municipality, Lindiwi Khuzwayo, said the municipality is aware of the sinkhole and a team will attend to it shortly.

“We are aware of a sinkhole on Earl Haig Road in Morningside. Our team are attending to it. There are also fallen trees in some areas. These are being attended to.”

Both Khuzwayo and Metro police warned motorists to avoid this road and seek alternative routes instead.

Khuzwayo urged residents to proceed with caution as wet weather is expected to continue throughout the day.

“Road users are urged to be cautious, particularly on roads that are still being repaired or rebuilt.”
