Gayton reveals why he skipped Mapaputsi’s funeral service

Minister Gayton McKenzie explains to the public why he had to be absent at Mapaputsi’s funeral service.

The veteran musician, real name Andile Ngwenya passed away over a week ago after reportedly battling illness.

Tributes pour in from legends in the industry, fans, and other musicians.

However, music legends were not happy with the Department of Arts, Sports and Culture minister for skipping the funeral.

“We all know the focus has shifted from kwaito singers and it’s on pop, amapiano, Afrobeats and other genres. Some of the artists have two decades without setting foot on stage to perform and most rely on the amaR350 (social relief grant). They are struggling.”

“The deputy minister who was here said kwaito singers will be recognised, but we know it’s just sweet air coming out of his mouth,” said one source.

Addressing the backlash, Gayton said he was unavailable due to his ministerial duties.

“I’m being bashed by people who were chilling at the after tears and that I didn’t attend Mapaputsi’s memorial and funeral services. I was in Russia doing my ministerial duties.”

“They went there for after tears. I can’t be told by someone who is drunk that I didn’t come,” he said.
