Users worldwide have been left frustrated after being met with repeated “refresh” messages.

Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is still recovering from a major global outage which has left users frustrated.

It is understood that the platform suffered a major global outage that struck on Thursday.

Users worldwide have been left frustrated after being met with repeated “refresh” messages, with many unable to log in, post video files and send direct messages.

Thousands of users recorded issues with the app with website tracker Downdetector. In the US, more than 25,000 reported issues.

Restoration

In a post on X, the platform said they are working around the clock to resolve the issue.

“We’re still experiencing issues from yesterday’s data center outage. Login and signup services are unavailable for some users, and there may be delays in notifications and Premium features.

“Our team is working 24/7 to resolve this. Thanks for your patience. We’ll have updates soon,” X said.

Cyberattack

This isn’t the first time X has been hit by a major outage this year; it was also hit by another severe outage on March 10.

Musk attributed that outage to a cyberattack, potentially by a foreign country or a coordinated group, but evidence has yet to be provided for the true cause of the attack.

Twitter becomes X

Musk ditched Twitter’s bird logo in 2006 and rebranded the platform with the name X and moved quickly into payments, banking and commerce.

X is thought to have around 200 million daily active users, but it has suffered repeated technical failures since the Tesla founder bought the app and sacked much of its staff.

Founded in 2006, Twitter takes its name from the sound of birds chattering, and it has used avian branding since its early days, when the company bought a stock symbol of a light blue bird for $15 (about R270), according to the design website Creative Bloq.
