SABC bids farewell to ‘Muvhango’

askMuvhango is officially coming to an end, after nearly three decades of captivating South African audiences.

SABC 2 and Word of Mouth Productions have confirmed that the beloved soapie will wrap up on 8 August 2025, marking the close of a groundbreaking era in local television.

Created by Duma ka Ndlovu, Muvhango first aired on 7 April 1997 and quickly became a cultural staple, introducing viewers to unforgettable characters like Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, James, Mulalo, KK and many others who went on to become household names.

The show played a pioneering role in bringing the Tshivenda language to the forefront at a time when most dramas were dominated by South Africa’s more widely spoken dialects.

Reflecting on the legacy of the show, Duma ka Ndlovu said: “Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated languages in South Africa now. It has been a privilege and an honour to create moments on television, where marginalised languages were at the centre of it all.”

Over the years, Muvhango didn’t just entertain, it educated, provoked thought, and created a sense of pride and representation among viewers.

As the country transitioned from apartheid to democracy, the show mirrored South Africa’s evolving identity through compelling storylines grounded in tradition and modern challenges.

Lala Tuku, acting group executive for video entertainment, praised the show’s contribution, saying: “For almost 30 years, Muvhango has been a pillar of SABC2’s programming and a beloved part of South African television history. More than just a drama, Muvhango has been the champion of language, culture, identity and national pride, inspiring, entertaining, educating and uniting audiences across South Africa.”

While Muvhango may be taking its final bow, a new chapter in local storytelling awaits.

Though unconfirmed by SABC, reports suggest the soapie will be succeeded by Pimville Queens, which is expected to debut on 11 August at 9pm.jefd
