Nhlanhla (30), from Ladysmith in KZN and Ivory Park in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni, was the breakout star when it debuted in 2023.

His character Eric was loved by Mzansi.

The actor said he drew inspiration from his childhood experiences and guys like Sipho, who was a grootman in ekasi.

“We thought Sipho had it all figured out, but he was vulnerable too. It’s a reminder that everyone carries their own burdens, and as actors, it’s our job to bring those stories to life.

“Eric is a typical kasi guy who studied but had to drop out because he didn’t have funds. He had a child while he was still in high school and that had pushed him to hustle. But because he grew up in the township and had no support, he had to push and hustle differently. This is what most guys ekasi know. It’s called ukuphanda,” said Nhlanhla.

He said he was glad he got to tell such a story.

“I had an opportunity to perform a storyline that touched a lot of people. Eric made me visit childhood memories and childhood traumas. He made me go back to the township and always wanted people to look up to me and be the voice of guys like Sipho.”

Nhlanhla said it’s a performer’s responsibility to make sure they portray a character well.

“I’ve portrayed men for the longest time in my life, and the more I do it, the more I realise where they come from and what inspires them. It’s important to play an authentic character because you reflect reality and become a mirror of someone’s reality. But particularly understanding what drives and influences the choices they make within the world of the story,” he said.
