With peak traffic conditions expected on the N3 Toll Route later this week, N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) has reminded motorists that distraction is a primary contributory factor to road crashes.

Split seconds make all the difference

Glances away from the road may have severe detrimental effects, with drivers often citing a loss of concentration or distractions as the cause of accidents.

“Safe driving requires that you focus your undivided attention on a multitude of sensory stimulants, and that you are able to make sound decisions in rapidly changing environments,” Thania Dhoogra, operations manager of N3TC, said.

She cautioned drivers to avoid distractions, such as using mobile devices or allowing interferences from passengers, while you are driving.

“Make sure that you stay alert at all times, and take regular breaks to rest and refresh yourself, especially when your concentration starts to wane,” Dhoogra said.

Plan and know your route

Traffic volumes, the time of day or night, weather conditions, emergency situations and general road conditions impact on safety, mobility and convenience on the road.

It is advisable to travel outside of peak periods, when volumes are high and the demands on drivers escalate.

Careful planning helps you to avoid a last-minute rush or late-night driving.

Traffic forecast

The traffic forecast provides an indication of the expected traffic volumes and peak conditions on the N3 Toll Route in a southbound direction (towards KwaZulu-Natal) this week.

Slow moving conditions are expected when traffic volumes are high.

High (heavy) volumes constitute more than 1500 vehicles per hour in a particular direction.

Stay up to date

N3TC aims to improve general road safety by making advance traffic information available to all road users.

“Our real-time traffic updates help ensure road users are better-informed in order to make safer choices. We encourage you to heed all sign-posted speed limits and warnings on the road. Ask your passengers to stay in touch via @N3Route on Twitter or to contact us on our 24-hour N3 Helpline on 0800 63 4357,” Dhoogra added.
