The driver of the truck that exploded recently in Boksburg, leaving 18 people dead has been released from custody.

The 32-year-old appeared briefly in court on Wednesday after he was taken into custody earlier in the week.

The driver was not charged and is now a free man, and according to several reports, an official from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said there was no case against the driver, as provincial police said there was not enough evidence against him.

There has apparently been a unilateral decision to release him.

An NPA official who spoke to The Citizen also confirmed the driver has been released, but said an official statement would be released on Wednesday afternoon.
