Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria has promised to take part in the FirstBank of Nigeria limited sponsored OBJ Golf Tournament in the nearest future.
He disclosed his intention at the closing ceremony of the fifth in the series of the tournament at Abeokuta Golf Club over the weekend.
Obasanjo who said he was still very active at 84, believes golf is friendlier, relaxing ;entertaining and gentler making it a sport he will play in the nearest future.
“I believe that at a stage in my life, I will take it easy and play the gentlemen sport like golf. Golf is more relaxing, gentler, more entertaining and friendlier and I believe there is no sport like it,” Obasanjo said.
While thanking FirstBank for their commitment to sponsorship of the OBJ Open, Obasanjo said he would appreciate very much if the sponsorship can be maintained like the Lagos Open Golf Championship which entres its sixtieth edition this year,; the Kaduna Polo (Georgian Cup), 102nd edition in 2021; the Dala Harcourt (Tennis) 30 years and Sardauna Northern Durbar Horse Racing Competition in Kano.
Meanwhile, Olajide Owolabi Michael once again stole the show in Abeokuta, winning his second trophy in the five years old tournament – 69 net score over 18-hole helped him to the top of the leaderbaord, beating over 124-others who took part in the competition.
Tolu Olugbemi with a score of 70-netcame second while Harrison Karuiku came in the third position, Karuiku shot 71-net but won on countback
Other winners are Sade Opawunmi who won in the ladies category, while Club Captain, Kola Adeneye won the Veteran category.
Speaking earlier, Tunde Owolabi, who represented the Group Managing Director of FirstBank, Adesola Adeduntan at the event pledged FirstBank’s commitment to sponsorship of the annual tournament.
The OBJ Golf Tournament debuted in 2015 and has been played consistently ever since.
