Over the years, Georgia Oboh’s performance at the Czech Ladies Open has continued to show some progressive improvement just as this year’s event was something worth memorable and cherishing.
Few weeks ago, the Nigerian young gun missed the weekend play (cut) at ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey; but over the weekend she recorded her best result (in terms of score) on the Ladies European Tour, since she earned her Tour card in 2020 at La Manga, Spain.
The 21 year old Edo State-born golfer held her nerves in an event of 130 field from 29 countries to secure a strong finish on the leaderboard, returning a brilliant score of 7-under par over three days at the tournament to share the spotlight with home players Sara Kuskova, Patricia Mackova, and Finland’s Anna Backman.
The Uk-based lady-golfer shot a final round bogey free 4-under par 68 to finish 7-under par for 54 holes contest having previously shot 1-under 71 and a 2-under 70 on days 1 & 2 respectively, to finish as high as joint 13th in the €200,000 Tipsport Czech Ladies Open held at Royal Beroun Golf Club.
Starting her final round onon hole 10, Oboh went flawless on the back nine all through with a level par 36, then went on to tailpiece her solid form, with four birdies for a 4 –under 32 on the front nine.
According to her manager, “Oboh’s score at the end of the tournament, was her best so far this season of three rounds under par and got better daily. Made 18 greens in regulation in the final round no drop shot, brilliant.”
However, the winner was amateur and home player Jana Melichova of Czech Republic with rounds of 68, 65 and 69 for a total score of 14-under-par with fellow Czech citizen Klara Spilkova in tied second along with Denmark’s Nicole Broch Estrup, just one shot back at 13-under par.
Four birdies in a six-hole stretch helped Melichova reach the turn in 32 and the amateur pulled further clear with another birdie at the 10th, before bouncing back from three consecutive bogeys to pick up a shot on her penultimate hole and end the week on 14 under.
“It’s a dream come true,” Melichova started. “I always planned to play LET and I always wanted to win a title and I succeeded today, I’m incredibly happy. I was mainly nervous, but I think I handled that stress really well.
“I was really happy with my game and everything was perfect. Even the three bogeys in a row didn’t get me down because I had people here and they were cheering for me, so I just wanted to make more birdies. I seemed calm but it’s tough out there, there were so many thoughts going through my mind so it’s hard to stay calm and patient.”
In all of these, it is hoped that Czech performance will be the tonic Oboh needed to catapult herself to the desired level, which ultimately is the professional ‘title’ point.
