The Professional Golfers’Association (PGA) of Nigeria golf course consultants were on a visit of an emerging Nigerian Navy Golf Course in Kano over the weekend for an on the spot inspection.
The consultants which include two principal executive officers, Uchenna Ezebuiro, Operations Director and Segun Obamuwe, Finance Director visited the site to ascertain the level of the constitution work.
However, the Operations Director commended the creativity of the Initiator of the project, Vice Admiral AZ Gambo, saying, “This Golf Course project will go a long way to change the economy of the people of this community by taking away the idle minds from the Streets.”
“We have gone round to see the level of work done so far, it’s commendable – the Golf House, the Green, the Irrigation system, a source of water which is very important for a golf course are fantastic; we’ll take the message to the PGA Director, Tony Philmoore and see how we can partner together,” Ezebuiro said.
Obamuwe, invariably expatiating on the course christened, Vice Admiral AZ Gambo Golf Club at the Nigerian Navy Logistics College (NNLC), Dawakin Tofa, Kano also believes the course would be a ‘mega brand’ for international tourism on completion.
Thus he enthused, “This is the first phase of the inspection and from what we have seen so far the contractors are doing a great job; a big green; bunkers; drainage canals; good irrigation system; in fact, we’re satisfied for now.”
The features of the golf club include: The Club House; Tractor House; Drinking Spot; Starting Point and Caddies Shed.
Other features are the design of the main course type of grass: On the Putting Green is Bent Grass; the Tee Box has Port Harcourt Grass; the Fairway is also Port Harcourt Gras, just as it has amazingly over 500 Sprinklers and over
63 Bunkers.
In this regard, the consultants affirmed in strong terms: “This inspection is essentially necessitated to ensure that the golf course is built to standard and in conformity to the new international handicapping system, where international recognition is given to the golf course through GPRS location on Google maps.”
Concluding on the first phase of the visit, the consultants recommend that a Pro-Am tournament should be organised on completion to launch the golf course, where the scores of the professional players could be used to achieve the Scratch Stroke (SS) indexing of the course to give it a face lift.
