Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident at a taxi rank, south of Johannesburg.

The incident happened at the Meyerton taxi rank on Tuesday morning.

Shooting at Meyerton taxi rank

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police investigations are continuing.

“According to reports, members from two security companies were shooting at each other and one of them sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital. While the police were combing the scene at the rank, they recovered 10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols.”

Nevhuhulwi said the motive of the shooting and the ownership of the firearms will be investigated.

No school children shot

“The reports that one scholar was shot are not true since the police went to the school and verified that no scholar was not injured during the shooting.

“Police investigations continue, and the public is urged to report any criminal activities on the Saps Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111.”

Soweto taxi violence

Last month, three people were shot dead during taxi-related violence and route disputes in Soweto.

Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said they were investigating a case of murder.

“The incident is believed to be taxi-related. The victims all belong to a taxi association. All possibilities will be investigated. High-calibre cartridges were found on the scene.

“At this stage, no one has been arrested. However, I can assure you that police are working non-stop to ensure the suspects are arrested,” Kweza said.

Ambush

It is understood that the deceased were members of the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association’s (WATA) route monitoring squad and were ambushed while en route to their main offices.

Kweza said the victims’ vehicle was travelling from the direction of Mofolo Village when the attack occurred.

According to WATA spokesperson Hamilton Miya, a silver vehicle reportedly opened fire on them, killing all occupants instantly.
