He might look like an intimidating gangster, but actor Bongani Maseko (44) has long left the tsotsi life behind.

The Soweto-born actor, who rose to fame as Sledge Moloi in the SABC1 drama series Zone 14, said he’s often celebrated by gangsters on the streets.

“I think this is because most of my roles are those of a thug. Maybe it’s also because of my looks, and they think I’m one of them. But I’m not. I’m just a comedian, a motivational speaker, and an actor,” Maseko explained.

He said at the age 17, he mingled with the wrong crowd, involving himself in gangsterism, crime, and drugs. This led to his arrest and a six-year prison sentence.

However, inspired by the late playwright Bongani Linda, he changed his life after being released from prison and pursued a career in entertainment.

“I came out of prison a changed man. I attended acting classes at Victory Sonqoba Theater Company, owned by Linda. My first role in Zone 14 reflected my previous life, so I nailed it,” said Bongani.

After his role in Zone 14, Bongani was often cast as thugs. On screen, he appears mean and heartless. However, he insists that in real life, he’s funny and sweet.

“I’m a sweet person who is funny to hang out with. But the reaction from TV fans makes me believe that I’ve been doing my job perfectly. That’s why I don’t get upset when I’m celebrated even by gangsters,” Bongani said.

He has appeared in more than 10 shows, including Generations: The Legacy, Isithembiso, Zibondiwe, House of Zwide, Heartlines, as well as 4Play: Sex Tips For Girls.

In his spare time, he visits schools to motivate pupils against crime and substance abuse.
