Although chemotherapy is an effective treatment for cancer, the body may suffer greatly from it.
Following chemotherapy, healing is the next step, and post-chemo care is essential.

During this stage, the main goals are to improve general wellbeing, regain strength, and manage adverse effects.

Patients can contribute to a seamless and successful healing process by being aware of and adhering to critical post-chemotherapy care protocols.

1. Eat a detailed diet

Immediately after treatment, focus on replenishing nutrients and energy by consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Staying hydrated with plenty of water and electrolyte-rich beverages is also essential.

2. Consider therapy

To manage lingering side effects, consider integrative therapies like deep breathing, massage, and meditation to alleviate pain, nausea, and stress. Gentle exercise, such as yoga or walking, can help regain strength and flexibility.

3. Rest and rewind

Prioritize rest and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night to allow your body to recover. Emotional support from loved ones, support groups, or counseling can help navigate the emotional aftermath of treatment.

4. Go for follow-up treatments

Follow-up appointments with your oncologist and primary care physician are vital to monitor progress and address any concerns. Additionally, consider supplements like probiotics, vitamin D, etc. after consulting your doctor to support immune function and overall health.

Things cancer survivors should do on completion of chemotherapy

Here are some do’s and don’ts to be mindful of;

1) Exercise regularly: 150mins in a week, moderate aerobic exercises like brisk walking.
2) Eat healthy: Avoid simple carbohydrates. Include fruits and vegetables in your regular diet. Choose healthy fats rich in omega-3 fatty acids and proteins with less saturated fat.
3) Sleep hygiene: Follow regular schedules, avoid caffeine and screens hours before sleeping.
4) Reduce stress: Meditate, socialise with family and friends, seek help from cancer support groups or therapist.
5) Stop using tobacco and avoid alcohol consumption.
Lastly, celebrate your milestone and focus on rebuilding your life, reconnecting with loved ones, and rediscovering activities that bring joy and fulfillment, marking a new chapter in your cancer journey. Regular health check-ups will help prevent any future health complications.
