President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Lesotho on a working visit to launch Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. He will participate in the proceedings with King Letsie III and Lesotho Prime Minister, Sam Matekane, at the Polihali Dam. The launch will commence with a sod-turning ceremony.
The presidency says this is a critical step on the journey to greater water and energy security for South Africans and Basotho. The project is a binational infrastructure scheme between Lesotho and South Africa.
It involves the construction of a network of tunnels and dams to transfer water from the Orange-Senqu River in the Lesotho Highlands to South Africa; and to utilise the water delivery system to provide hydro-electric power to the Kingdom of Lesotho.
