Rebecca Malope to be honoured at at Basadi in Music Awards 2025

Legendary gospel artist Rebecca Malope is set to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Basadi in Music Awards, taking place on August 2 at the Joburg Theatre.

Reflecting on the recognition, Malope expressed deep gratitude. “Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award is such an honour, I’m grateful beyond words,” she shared in a statement to TshisaLIVE.

With a remarkable music career that spans over four decades, Rebecca, born Batsogile Lovederia Malope has become a household name in South African gospel.

She shot to fame in 1987 after winning the Shell Road to Fame competition with her breakout track Shine On, and has since gone on to release more than 36 albums and sell over 10 million records worldwide.

“To still be seen and celebrated after so many years in this industry is a great blessing from God, one I never take for granted,” she added.

Affectionately known as “The queen of gospel,” Malope’s contributions have extended far beyond her music.

She was the longtime host of It’s Gospel Time for 15 years, served as a judge on Clash of the Choirs, and in 2021 was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga by President Cyril Ramaphosa in recognition of her outstanding work in the arts.

As she continues her journey in gospel music, Rebecca is also embracing new ventures.

She revealed she is working on launching her own fashion line, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter.

“I’m in my sewing studio creating a dress from scratch to mark this moment. It’s not just a celebration of where I’ve been but of where I’m going. I’m stepping into a new chapter, adding fashion design to the journey, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
