New evidence emerges on Senzo Meyiwa’s case
The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has taken a new turn as the state introduced previously unseen photographic evidence tied to one of the suspects.
During Monday’s proceedings at the Pretoria High Court, state prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi revealed that new images connected to accused number three, Mthobisi Mncube, had surfaced.
The photos, which were reportedly found on Mncube’s phone, will be presented through the testimony of Sergeant Moses Mabasa, the police officer responsible for extracting digital data from the suspects’ devices.
“We’re bringing in three new photos of accused number three. It is actually one photo shown from three different angles,” said Baloyi.
The images, according to the state, were discovered during a digital sweep of Mncube’s cellphone.
Additional images tied to accused number two were found on a memory card, with two of those also featuring accused number one.
Sergeant Mabasa, who initially testified in 2023 and was recalled in May 2024, is expected to return once more to clarify the origin and relevance of the photographs.
However, the defense team asked for a delay. Advocate Sipho Ramosepele, speaking on behalf of accused number two, said that Mncube and Sibiya wish to wait for their legal representative, Advocate Charles Mnisi, to return before the matter proceeds.
“There is a further instruction emanating from Mr Mncube which pertains to these particular photos, and he says he can only give that instruction to Advocate Mnisi alone,” Ramosepele explained, also requesting time to prepare a written argument in response to the state’s application.
The trial is set to continue on Tuesday.
