“He is a very important coach and leader for Leinster. The players learn a lot from him, especially about the right mental attitude. It’s a privilege to work with him.”

RG Snyman says former Bok boss Jacques Nienaber brings a “different mindset” to Leinster, helping to transform the club into an even more formidable European force.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with Rapport, the Springbok lock highlighted the impact fellow two-time World Cup winner Nienaber has made since joining the four-time Investec Champions Cup winners as senior coach last year.

“The guys enjoy him because of the way he coaches and the kind of person he is,” said Snyman. “The guys get a lot of energy from him, especially in training.

“He is a very important coach and leader for Leinster. The players learn a lot from him, especially about the right mental attitude. It’s a privilege to work with him.”

Nienaber’s defensive expertise was evident in Leinster’s recent South African tour where, despite missing several internationals, the Irish giants secured a narrow victory over a Bok-laden Sharks side in Durban.

“He will give his all for that team and make a positive difference. That’s 100% what he does at Leinster. He brings a different mindset to the defence in particular,” Snyman said.

The 30-year-old lock recently extended his Leinster contract for another season, citing Nienaber as a key factor in his decision.

‘This is where my rugby is progressing’

“At this stage I feel this is where my rugby is progressing. This season for me is about enjoying my rugby and expressing myself on the field,” he added.

“It’s also an advantage to have Jacques here to further improve my game. Jacques knows exactly what to look for because he worked with the Boks for a long time.”

Snyman’s injury-plagued four years at Munster, where he played just 20 matches, stand in stark contrast to his debut Leinster season where he’s already featured 14 times.

Leinster’s dominance was on full display on Saturday in a 62-0 demolition of Harlequins at Croke Park, scoring 10 tries to reach a ninth consecutive Champions Cup quarter-final.

Leo Cullen’s charges will host Glasgow Warriors at the Aviva Stadium on Friday, as their pursuit of a record-equalling fifth European title continues.

“Everyone accepts the responsibility to perform and get the club on its best foot for the weekend,” Snyman said. “Because there is such healthy competition between the players, it brings out the best in everyone.”
