A sold out crowd of around 55000 people will pack out the Cape Town Stadium to watch the Stormers take on Munster in the United Rugby Championship (URC) Grand Final next week Saturday.

The tickets for the final went on sale at 10am on Thursday morning, but just three hours later just after 1pm it was announced that they were sold out.

The Stormers have been setting URC records for crowd attendance this season and set one with the over 47000 that turned out for their semi-final win over Connacht over the past weekend, but will rewrite that record in next weekend’s finale.

Last season the Stormers hosted an all South African final against the Bulls, with a sold out crowd of 31000 fans in attendance, with Covid protocols limiting the number of people allowed in the stadium, but with no such restrictions this year a full house will be in attendance.

Springbok Test

The last time the Cape Town Stadium was sold out was for the third Test between the Springboks and Wales in July last year, and a similar party atmosphere is expected for the final.

Stormers hooker JJ Kotze, who started in last year’s URC final and will likely play off the bench this time around with Springbok hooker Joseph Dweba expected to start, admitted that the team was excited and looking forward to what should be an amazing experience.

“Everyone is very excited for the game, especially since the tickets are sold out already.  Last year the stadiums were still capped and I think it was about 30000 people who were allowed to attend. So the crowd will be almost double this time and it will be great to see all the people there,” said Kotze.

“I have never played in front of a crowd this big. We have some Springboks in the team who have played in front of big crowds. But I think for most of the guys this will be something new for them.

“Even the last two games, having over 40000 people was insane. So it is really going to be an experience and I don’t really know what to expect.”
