Warning: video is of a graphic nature.

As KwaZulu-Natal comes to terms with the killing of a Durban family in drive-by shooting, a video has emerged of the last moment of the family and the tenacity of the criminals to ensure that the job was done.

Brandon “Puff” Kalicharan, his wife Jeconiah Pillay and their child came under fire while on Peters Road, Springfield on Tuesday, 21 March 2023.

‘Puff’ Kalicharan was the leader of the notorious 11th Street Gang.

Emer-G-Med said its paramedics arrived on the scene and found a VW Amarok bakkie that had been sprayed with high-calibre bullets.

“Two occupants in the front of the vehicle, an adult male and female were declared dead on arrival of paramedics,” said Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

“A teenage female who was seated in the back of the vehicle was found in a critical condition.”

In the CCTV footage in the possession of The Citizen, the black VW Amarok with the family inside can be seen crashing into a car across the road as a white Toyota double cab bakkie with presumably the suspects speed by after the shooting.

However, the criminals wanted to make sure the family were dead and returned a few moments later.

One suspect then gets out of the bakkie brandishing what looks like an AK47 and sprays the family’s car before getting back into a getaway vehicle and speeding off.

Police investigations

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed that a 42-year-old man, his 34-year-old wife and a nine-year-old girl “were fatally wounded in an apparent drive-by shooting”.

“The motive for the killing is unknown, though preliminary investigations suggest that the man who was shot was allegedly involved in drug and gang-related activities in Chatsworth and was a person of interest on some cases being investigated by the Hawks.”

Warzone

Meanwhile, the Wentworth area has been turned into a warzone, as shootings have escalated in KZN over the past week.

Gunshots, which sound like they are coming from high-calibre automatic rifles, were ringing in the air in Wentworth on Monday.
