For the first time ever, Thabo Bester’s mother, Maria Mabaso, has spoken publicly about her fugitive son, who is allegedly on the run with partner Nandipha Magudumana – aka Dr Nandi.
In a sit down with broadcaster eNCA, the elderly woman revealed how her life has dramatically changed since Bester faked his death and escaped a Bloemfontein prison last year. Speaking to eNCA journalist Silindelo Masikane, Maria Mabaso shared how she had lost contact with Thabo Bester after he had gone to live with her mother as a child.
Mabaso then claims she was shocked to hear of his crimes, namely the conviction of rape, murder, and fraud.
In 2022, she was notified of Bester’s death and took steps to have his body collected and buried. But in a twisted turn of events, it was discovered that the body found in his Magaung Correctional Centre cell did not belong to Bester.
Since then, it’s been a living hell for the distraught mother, who admitted to receiving anonymous death threats.
A forensic psychologist who interviewed Thabo Bester in 2011 explains why he must be caught urgently. Images via YouTube screenshot: eNCA.mShe said: “All I wanted was my son’s body, and now Im going to be killed for that?
“I don’t feel safe. I get phone calls every day, I don’t know who to trust. They tell me they know where my children live and where I live. I’m scared to go to the shops or a mall. He has put my life at risk. I’m not free”.
Maria even claimed that she was suicidal. She continues: “It would be better if I kill myself before his allies get to me. Maria went on to claim that she is afraid of her own son, who she believes suffers from a mental health illness.
She continued: “There is something wrong with him. He needs help. We would like to help him, but we are also afraid of him. When you hear about the things he’s done, how can you not be afraid of him?
