The release is timely because South Africans created more than 31 000 gospel playlists leading up to the Easter holidays.

There is probably no more opportune time for a gospel artist to release an album than during Easter.

This is what music group The Jesus Collective has done, releasing its second album, Flow Vol.1 this Good Friday.

“We have chosen this date because Good Friday is one of the reminders that our God sent his son to the cross for our sins and our inequities,” said The Jesus Collective founder Hilton Petersen, speaking to The Citizen.

Recent figures by streaming platform Spotify show that more than 31 000 gospel playlists were created by South Africans before the Easter holidays.

‘A reminder‘

“It is a reminder that he (Christ) is alive, it is a reminder that he (Christ) was crucified and he rose again,” said Petersen.

The Jesus Collective is an evangelical music organisation that aims to uplift communities through gospel music and mentor up-and-coming musicians from previously disadvantaged areas.

The organisation partners with established South African artists and community leaders, who mentor these musicians and travel with them as part of The Jesus Collective.

The group’s debut album in 2022, Restored, earned seven Crown Gospel Music Award nominations and won three awards, including the Album of the Year.

“I think the difference of the album is we really have put it more resources. We have got more expertise around it,” said Petersen about the new album.

Flow Vol . 1 is a live album described as a celebration of fearless worship, uniting some of South Africa’s most beloved gospel artists and international guests in a powerful musical experience.

It is produced by South Africa’s Brandon “Bobby” George, together with US producer Asaph Ward.

“Inspiring songs… captivating voices… meaningful musicianship… That’s TJC! I am excited about what TJC is doing and am blessed to have been a part of the production process,” said Ward in a press release.

Ward’s portfolio includes collaborations with gospel legends such as Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond and Marvin Winans.

Their 2022 album was released when the world found its feet following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This is in a time of thanking God and realising where he brought us from and where he is currently taking us,” said Petersen.

The new album features familiar voices, such as Khaya Mthethwa, Loyiso Bala and Ntokozo Mbambo.

Joining them are Charnell Joseph, Max Mqhakayi, and Xola Toto – alongside rising acts Nkele Dee and Caren Caine.

In 2024, the group released a single from the new album titled Freedom Song, with Loyiso.
