Trump’s erratic presidency may have pushed Canada closer to the British monarchy, with King Charles enjoying unexpected support
Donald Trump is a walking, talking example of how anyone can become a victim of “unintended consequences”.
His wild actions and statements since taking office as US president in January have sometimes backfired spectacularly.
One instance where he has clearly not got what he wanted is with Canada, America’s vast northern neighbour, which Trump believes should be the 51st state of the US.
That arrogance led directly to the collapse of right-wing politics in Canada and to the election of liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Canadians, now realising their friendship with their southern neighbours is fragile, are looking elsewhere for friends and validation.

That’s why many of them have welcomed the visit of UK monarch King Charles this week.
Those sentiments have even been expressed by supporters of a Canadian republic who are opposed to a monarchy.
While Charles is the titular head of state of Canada – and other Commonwealth countries like Australia – he is now in the position to project an image of a system which is solid, reliable and constant.
That’s the opposite of what Trump has been offering.
Trump probably didn’t intend to be a booster for the British royal family, but that looks like exactly what he did.
