The oldest church in South Africa is the Lutheran Church in Strand Street, located in Cape Town.

This church, established in 1780, is the oldest church building in the country still in use for regular services. It was declared a national monument in 1949 and continues to serve the community today.

Another significant historical church is the Groote Kerk in Cape Town, founded in 1678. While the original structure was replaced in 1841, the Groote Kerk remains South Africa’s oldest place of Christian worship.

Additionally, St George’s Cathedral, also known as the “People’s Cathedral,” is the oldest cathedral in Southern Africa. Located in Wale Street, Cape Town, it was consecrated in 1847 and is renowned for its role in the resistance against apartheid. The cathedral was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and is built from sandstone sourced from Table Mountain.

Each of these churches holds a unique place in South Africa’s religious and architectural history.
