Having taken the lead in the last Shoot Through video of automotive components it can penetrate, armoured vehicle manufacturer SVI Engineering’s AK47 takes aim in the latest clips against a car battery.

Touted as a battle of “lead against lead”, the synopsis in the ninth video in the series remains the same as before; a single 7.62 x 39 mm round shot at an object while captured on a Photron Fastcam SA4 high-speed camera operating at 30 000 frames per seconds.
Hits and misses
Presented without the armoured plate SVI normally attaches to all of its vehicles, the video sees the AK47 round easily piercing the lower plastic casing, but not the battery itself as no exit mark is visible.
According to SVI’s CEO Jaco de Kock, while an unsurprising outcome, the assault rifle left a mark big enough to render the battery unusable despite the no exit “route” being visible.
“While the lead-acid battery managed to stop the round, the resulting pressure build-up broke the casing – quite dramatically, rendering the battery inoperable,” De Kock said.

As well damaging casing, the round’s hitting of the upper section of the battery saw it dislodge the indicator roundels at the top, resulting in yet more damage and rendering it obsolete even further.
SVI Business Development Director Nicol Louw, however, stated that the bullet’s failure to completely penetrate battery still renders it a plausible object to hide behind in addition to being a common component able to withstand an assault rifle.
AK47 drops back
Despite taking damage, the battery joins the engine block and cylinder head, both from a Volkswagen Polo, and the subject of the first video, a brake disc lifted from a Toyota Land Cruiser 70-series as the latest vehicle part able to withstand an AK47.
Objects that have failed so far include a seatbelt and shock absorber and the subject of the latest clip, an owner’s manual from a Ford Everest.
It, therefore, takes the overall score to 4-5 in favour of components able to veer off an AK47.
The result of how the brake disc fared can be viewed on the SVI Engineering YouTube channel.
