The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Saturday, 17 May 2025.

Persistently high temperatures are expected in The Northern Cape’s Richtersveld Municipality tomorrow, while dry conditions are forecast nationwide. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather warnings, Saturday, 17 May

Advisories

The weather service has warned of a heat wave with persistently high temperatures over the Richtersveld Municipality of the Northern Cape.

An intense cold front is expected to affect the Western Cape and the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape from Tuesday, 20 May to Wednesday, 21 May. The public and small stock farmers are advised that very cold conditions, heavy rainfall, snowfalls, strong to gale force winds, and very rough seas can be expected.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what to expect in your province on Saturday, 17 May:

Gauteng:

Residents of Gauteng can expect partly cloudy conditions in the extreme north-west, otherwise it will be fine and cool.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “very high”.

Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Mpumalanga:

Mpumalanga residents will wake up to morning fog over the Highveld and escarpment, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm but hot in the Lowveld.

Limpopo:

The day will be partly cloudy and warm, but cool over the central parts.

North West:

Morning fog patches await North West residents in the east, otherwise conditions will be fine and cool, becoming partly cloudy.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience morning fog patches in places, otherwise it will be fine and cool, becoming partly cloudy.

Northern Cape:

The day will be fine and cool to warm, but hot to very hot in the extreme west, becoming partly cloudy.

Western Cape:

Western Cape residents can expect cloudy conditions with fog patches along the south-west and south coast in the morning, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, but hot along the West Coast.

Eastern Cape (western half):

It will be partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy in places along the coast and adjacent interior in the evening.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

The day will be partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy in places along the coast and adjacent interior in the evening.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Residents of KwaZulu-Natal can expect fine and cool to warm conditions, becoming partly cloudy in the late afternoon.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “very high”.
