You know that sinking feeling when your meal arrives, and you instantly regret your choice?

I’ve recently realised that there’s one guaranteed way of avoiding that – by becoming a “menu sleuth.”

What’s a menu sleuth?

It’s someone who walks into a restaurant already armed with all the information about the various dishes on the menu.

They know exactly which dish is the crowd favourite, which appetiser is too good to miss, and whether the portions are generous or leave you reaching for the breadbasket. And they get all this info before they even step through the door.

How to become a menu sleuth

A little detective work is all that it takes. With the rising cost of living many of us have had to tighten our entertainment budget and this is one good way to be able to budget for an evening out and ensure that we aren’t disappointed with our choice of dish.

After years of experiencing food envy on a regular basis, I decided to become a menu sleuth – and have taken to scrolling through reviews, photos of the food, and checking what the regulars recommend on Google Reviews.

Love a good special?

The best part? Menu sleuthing isn’t just about ordering right—it’s about uncovering hidden gems. I have discovered off-menu items, early bird specials, daily specials, happy hour deals and winter menus.

Trust me, with a little research, you’ll find plenty of deals out there waiting for you.

Some say this takes the spontaneity out of dining out. But why leave things to chance when you can guarantee a great meal every time?

So, if you’re tired of making regretful orders while eyeing your friend’s plate in envy, it’s time to embrace your inner menu sleuth.
