If you’re dampening your makeup sponge before applying your foundation, you might want to think twice about doing so.

Makeup fanatics know that if you use a beauty blender to apply your foundation, you have to dampen it first for the best results.

While the result might be a flawless look, the moist beauty blender you’re using may not be the best choice.

Madame Sweat, who is a personal hygiene expert, took to TikTok to share the shocking news that your beloved sponges contain a high amount of fungi in them.

“After you apply your foundation and you just let your sponge sit, that is when the fungi is starting to grow,” Sweat warns her followers.

She says that according to Medical News Today, makeup sponges have the highest rate of fungi of up to 56 percent.

“Next time you moisten it you’re just layering on more fungi. And it’s all living in those tiny little crevices inside that sponge,” she adds.

She recommends a foundation brush as a better option for applying your foundation.

However, it is important to remember that you have to wash your foundation brush with shampoo every day.

“I know that’s crazy but if you knew what was in them you definitely would be washing your brushes every day,” she continues.

If you’re now freaked out about using your beloved makeup sponge or foundation brush, you can always use your fingertips.

Just remember to wash your hands before you touch your face.

Start by placing a small amount of foundation on the back of the hand.

Using your index finger, dot the foundation on the nose, chin, forehead, and cheeks.

You can then use circular patting motions to blend the foundation.
