A 35-year-old woman has been charged with the murder of a taxi owner inside the Wynberg Magistrates Court.

The woman was arrested over the weekend.

The man was shot dead last week while many people were in the court building.

Charged

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the woman was charged on Sunday and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

“Western Cape Serious Violent Crime Detectives have been hard at work and, as a consequence, made a breakthrough in the murder case. A 35-year-old woman has been charged with the murder.”

Potelwa said as the team of investigation continues with the probe more arrests are imminent.

“The investigation commenced after a brazen shooting incident on Tuesday, 08 April 2025, where a 50-year-old man was shot and killed at the Wynberg Regional Court. Since the shooting incident, the investigators worked around the clock in search of the perpetrators.

“Western Cape Saps management has welcomed the breakthrough and expressed confidence in the team of investigators as the investigation unfolds. It is expected that the investigation will determine the motive for the murder,” Potelwa said.

The director-general of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Doc Mashabane, conducted a site visit to the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court following the murder.

The department’s spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said as part of immediate interventions, Mashabane directed the installation of a security scanner to tighten access control to prosecutors’ and magistrates’ offices, and the enhanced vetting of court officials.

“The director-general further directed that officials urgently finalise a report on the entire incident, which will be submitted to the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi, and Chief Justice Mandisa Maya.

“The department reiterates its commitment to ensuring that courts remain places for the dispensation of justice and not places where crime is committed,” Masibi said.

The Office of the Chief Justice conveyed condolences to the taxi owner’s family.
