Now is the time for someone like Sihle Zikalala to crack the whip it’s done only to improve the image of the ANC.
What a surprise… City of Joburg mayor Dada Morero – who presides over a slow-motion car crash of a metro – says there are “challenges” to be faced and they are “complex” to deal with.
“For instance, the city is not financially stable, infrastructure is decaying and service delivery backlogs have reversed the gains we have made.”
Given that this comes straight out of the ANC “Firepool excuse” manual – what gains have you actually made, comrade?
It is unsurprising that the mayor has failed to cut the dead wood from the municipal administration.
He has taken the severe step, though, of “rotating” those municipal managers and members of the mayoral committee who are not performing.
That fits in well with the ANC’s de facto policy of no consequences for any cadre who steals or breaks things.

But wait, before you lose faith in our glorious city leader, he has said he will deploy a “bomb squad” of experts to ensure Johannesburg is rescued.
That elite team will be headed by former SABC news chief and ANC propagandist Snuki Zikalala.
Whether he uses this opportunity to be the voice of his master, Morero, or whether he will roll up his sleeves and get stuck in remains to be seen.
In his favour, Zikalala is a man of principle and one of the first to go against Jacob Zuma.
He is now head of the ANC’s Veterans League, which has been a voice for positive change.
Now is the time for someone like Zikalala to crack the whip – even if for no other reason than he understands completely how much damage is being done to the image of his beloved ANC by the current inept cadres deployed by the party in the municipal sphere across the country.
We will withhold judgment for now, however, on this predicted renaissance.
