Zulu Mecca is out to claim her seat in the game as she educates about culture in her new visuals for her single, ‘Culture’. The black and white visuals speak very well with the theme of the song as it takes you into a ‘mesmerising’ state of mind. This is guided by the classic instrumental consisting of hard boom-bap and what I would call a ‘subtle trumpet’.
The bars for me are out of this world as she fights for her narrative and believes strongly in her influence of culture in her own way and there is nothing anyone can do as her strongest weapon is her pen and she will continue writing until the world/universe says that you have played your role in your purpose.
I love how she references all of the best Hip-Hop projects such as ‘The Carter III’ and the strong message behind the single. From understanding of it, she is simply trying to say ‘I will not let the ways of today’s culture movement influence who I am from an identity perspective as she is sorely rooted with herself and understands the direction she wants to take even when people do not understand the vision and the direction’.
I also love how she tells a story through the clothing pieces and utilising fabric in one of the scenes that is cut out showing a portion of her face. It is highly artistic as it is indeed the small things like how the make up on the face is done that tells a story on it’s own and I fully understand the direction of the visuals or at least I do but very concise with the theme and how she speaks on vasrious cultures from back then as well as the oppressive system we have created for ourselves and yet define it as ‘Culture’ forgetting that we make the ‘culture’ and without us as individuals there is no ‘Culture’.
