Cassper Nyovest and the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) have officially turned the page on one of the industry’s longest-running public fallouts. After a decade of disagreements, criticism and boycotts, the award-winning rapper has announced that he will serve as the official host of the 2026 SAMAs, marking a significant reconciliation between the two parties. The ceremony is set to take place on 15 August 2026 at Sun City.
Sharing the announcement on social media, Cassper wrote: “The Kat is out the bag!!!! I am so excited for this !!! After 10 years of not seeing eye to eye, they called me in and we have come to an agreement !!! This is gonna be huge!!!! 15 August !! We are going to Sun City and I am your OFFICIAL HOST!!!”
The relationship between Cassper Nyovest and the SAMAs became strained in 2016 following the 22nd edition of the awards. While his second studio album Refiloe enjoyed commercial success and his Fill Up Orlando Stadium concert attracted tens of thousands of fans, the rapper publicly questioned the awards’ judging process after receiving fewer accolades than he believed his work deserved. He also criticised what he described as inconsistencies in recognising commercially successful artists.
Following the 2016 ceremony, Cassper repeatedly voiced his frustrations with the SAMAs on social media and in interviews. Over the years, he accused the awards of failing to properly recognise hip hop and commercially successful musicians, at one stage describing the awards as no longer representing the industry’s best interests. His criticism eventually led him to distance himself from the event, with the rapper making it clear that he would no longer attend or actively participate in the awards.
Despite the public fallout, Cassper continued building one of South Africa’s most successful music careers. He expanded his Fill Up concert series, released several projects and remained one of the country’s most recognisable entertainers. During that period, he also continued adding to his SAMA achievements, having won awards including Best Newcomer in 2015 and later receiving recognition through collaborations and nominations.
The announcement that Cassper will host the 2026 ceremony signals an end to the long-standing dispute. Rather than revisiting past disagreements, both the artist and the organisers appear to have reached common ground ahead of this year’s event.
With the awards returning to Sun City on 15 August and Cassper Nyovest taking centre stage as host, the 2026 South African Music Awards will also mark the first official collaboration between the rapper and the SAMAs since their highly publicised fallout began a decade ago.
