Award-winning rapper and entrepreneur Cassper Nyovest has announced the launch of Million Voices, a new initiative aimed at tackling period poverty by providing menstrual hygiene products to one million girls in South Africa. The announcement marks a new chapter in his ongoing efforts to use his platform to contribute to meaningful social change.

Earlier this year, Nyovest publicly shared that he had been searching for a greater purpose beyond public recognition, saying he wanted to find practical ways to make a positive impact on society. That search has now led to the creation of Million Voices, a programme focused on improving access to sanitary products for school-going girls.

Announcing the initiative, Nyovest revealed that he only recently became familiar with the term “period poverty.”

“A couple of weeks ago, I heard the term period poverty for the first time. To be honest, I had never heard of it before. But as a husband and the father of a little girl, I believe it’s my responsibility to understand the challenges women and girls face. Something as natural as a period should never be a barrier to education, opportunity, or dignity.”

Nyovest said becoming a husband and father has encouraged him to learn more about the realities faced by women and girls, particularly regarding menstrual health and access to essential hygiene products. He also shared one of the statistics that motivated him to take action.

“One of the stats that hit me was that 83% of the girl child do not have consistent access to menstrual hygiene products at school and at home.”

He described period poverty as an issue that extends beyond women alone, saying, “Period poverty is not a women’s problem. I think it’s a South African problem and, more importantly, I think it’s a human problem. That’s how I look at it, and I’ve taken it upon myself to not only learn about it but to do something about it.”

Through Million Voices, Nyovest hopes to help at least one million girls gain access to menstrual hygiene products. While acknowledging that he cannot solve the challenge on his own, he believes the initiative can make a meaningful difference.

“I know that it’s not possible for me to help every single girl child, but I believe that I can start somewhere. I’m starting a programme where I want to help at least one million girl students in South Africa with this problem.”

He also called on individuals, businesses and organisations to support the campaign through donations, adding that he will personally contribute to launching the initiative. His goal is to reach one million beneficiaries by Women’s Month.

“I’ve given myself specifically the date of Women’s Month, actually,” he said, adding that further details on how people can donate and get involved will be announced soon.

Nyovest also confirmed that the project is being developed in partnership with an organisation led by women who have been educating him about the scale of period poverty.

“I’m not doing this by myself. I’m collaborating with a company that is run by such extraordinary women, and they are the ones who are educating me about this pandemic of period poverty.”

The Million Voices initiative is expected to provide more information in the coming weeks on donation channels, partnerships and the distribution of menstrual hygiene products to girls across South Africa.
