Christy Obomanu-Assisi of Port Harcourt Golf club (junior category) is set to present the trophies she has won while representing Rivers State in tournaments in recent years to Governor Nyesom Wike.
In an interview with Christy’s manager and mother, Judith Obomanu-Assisi, a lady professional golfer also of Port Harcourt Golf Club recently, she revealed a visitation letter has been forwarded to the Governor for approval.
Part of the letter states: “I seek an audience with you to meet with Miss Christy Obomanu-Assisi as she has been longing to present her trophies to you as a father; this will boost the morale of this young, vibrant and talented Rivers State-born athlete.”
The manager who is also till date, the coach and force behind junior/youth golf development in Rivers State believes in Governor Wike’s sincerity to respond to Christy’s request.
“Governor Wike is someone who stands by his words; I’m sure he’ll respond to Christy’s request, because it will encourage her and other athletes to do more for the state going forward,” the manager said.
Recalled in 2018 Youth Games which held in Ilorin, Kwara State, Obomanu-Assisi represented Rivers State and was the only medalist with three bronze medals for the state.
Obomanu-Assisi, 12, is arguably one of Nigeia’s emerging golf star who has been displaying courage and commitment in women golf; again, she represented Rivers State and won gold at the 2018 Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Championship which held at the Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos.
These exploits of Obomanu-Assisi interestingly, tickled the Rivers State Government which in appreciation awarded her scholarship for her educational pursuits under the supervision of Boma Iyaye as the then Sport Commissioner of the state.
But the scholarship since 2018 when Obomanu-Assisi was 10, is still to see the light of day, just as all entreaties to ensure the promise was fulfilled remained a conundrum.
In this regard, the teenager has taken it upon himself to see Governor Wike physically and present the trophies before the next Awa Junior Open Championship billed for Ikeja Golf Club in Lagos, come October 2021.
Obomanu-Assisi however concluded, “I feel honoured always to respresent my State and I want an opportunity to meet my Governor, Nyesom Wike to present my trophies to him and thank him for the much he has done for sport so far in the State.”
