In a recent episode of The Sobering Podcast on YouTube, South African rapper Flvme spoke candidly about the late Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and the profound impact he had on his journey in the South African hip hop scene.

During the interview, Flvme touched on the topic of receiving recognition from industry veterans, often referred to as OGs. He expressed gratitude to those who had acknowledged his work, but singled out AKA as someone whose validation carried particular significance.

“I think for me that was my target from when I was still a kid regardless of anything else,” Flvme said, reflecting on the moment he received praise from the late rapper.

He continued, “Not to discredit every other OG that has given me my flowers but AKA for me was always the one I was looking for.”

Flvme emphasized the influence AKA had on shaping his passion for South African hip hop, noting that his admiration began at a young age.

“That’s the man that made me fall in love with SA Hip Hop anyways,” he said.

He added, “I think I was even like 10 or 11 when I first heard him the first time so since that day that guy has always been the guy I looked up to.”

Flvme explained that receiving acknowledgment from AKA marked a pivotal moment in his career. It was a turning point that reinforced his belief in his path and solidified his commitment to the music industry.

“So when that one happened for me, I was like wow I think we got it going now, that’s when I believed in the dream for real,” he said.

The comments highlight AKA’s lasting legacy and continued influence on the new generation of South African hip hop artists. For Flvme, the connection with AKA was not just based on music but on a long-standing admiration that began in his early years.

Flvme’s reflections adds to the ongoing conversation around giving recognition to those who paved the way in the local hip hop scene.

AKA continues to be remembered not only for his musical contributions but also for his support of younger artists. Flvme’s remarks serve as another reminder of the rapper’s enduring impact on the culture and the industry.
