Drama unfolded at the Ogba Magistrate Court in Ikeja on Thursday as a couple, Stella Omonigho Eromosele and Olufemi George Shodimu, were arraigned over an alleged plot to abduct, assault, and threaten a Lagos journalist.
Court papers alleged that Stella, together with unidentified armed men, stormed the journalist’s office in a bid to whisk her away. Prosecutors said she showed the gateman the reporter’s photo and vehicle details while the armed men lurked outside waiting to strike.
It was the quick intervention of security personnel that allegedly foiled the kidnap attempt, saving the journalist from being abducted.
The defendants also face charges of conspiracy, assault, and destruction of property relating to the same incident.
The case has drawn attention amid growing concerns over attacks on journalists in Nigeria. Press freedom advocates are demanding a thorough probe and justice for media workers facing threats and violence.
Both Stella and Olufemi pleaded to the charges. The magistrate stressed they remain innocent until proven guilty. The case was adjourned to a later date.
