South African rapper and performer Gigi Lamayne recently sat down with Masego Seemela on the In The Know Sowetan Podcast where she opened up about the personal experiences shaping both her artistry and the direction her career has started taking in recent years.
The conversation has been gaining attraction across social platforms, with many listeners drawn to the honesty and vulnerability Gigi Lamayne displayed throughout the interview. One of the standout moments came when she was asked whether Reason had influenced her decision to explore sounds and spaces outside of hip hop.
Known to many as Sizwe Moeketsi and later through his alter ego Sizwe Alakine, Reason first earned recognition as one of South Africa’s strongest lyrical battle rappers before successfully transitioning into the Amapiano movement. His journey from traditional hip hop into a different musical lane has often been viewed as one of the notable reinventions within the country’s entertainment space.
Speaking openly about their relationship and creative dynamic, Gigi Lamayne explained that his influence extends far beyond music alone.
“You know Sizwe is such a safety net to me that he allows me to dream,” she shared. “In as much as we are romantically involved he plays almost like somewhat of a big brother role to me.”
Her words reflected a sense of comfort and reassurance that she says has helped her embrace opportunities she may once have doubted herself stepping into. Gigi Lamayne described Reason as someone who never dismisses ideas, no matter how unexpected they may sound.
“When I feel like doing something, it’s never ridiculous for him,” she said. “Every time one of his kids comes up with a new thing they want to do, he goes in and fully supports. So sometimes it almost feels like I’m the sixth one.”
She laughed while explaining how his naturally supportive personality has become part of her everyday life, saying he constantly encourages people around him to explore their interests without fear.
“He never wants anyone to feel boxed in, he loves it when you explore,” she continued. “I don’t know if that comes from being a father or whether that’s just the person he is but I’m definitely reaping the benefits.”
The rapper also reflected on how different the experience has been compared to moments in the industry where artists are often questioned for wanting to try something new. According to Gigi Lamayne, Reason’s response has always been the opposite.
“Whereas many a time in the industry people would’ve been like ‘No why do you want to do that?’ he would literally say to me ‘Try doing this thing.’”
That encouragement eventually pushed her toward exploring three step music and stepping into DJ culture on a larger scale. Gigi Lamayne revealed that last year she found herself performing at the internationally recognised Amsterdam Dance Event where she played three shows as both a DJ and artist, something she says many people still do not know about.
“Had he not encouraged me, I wouldn’t have done it,” she admitted.
Beyond the headlines and public image, the interview offered listeners a more personal look into Gigi Lamayne’s evolving creative path. It highlighted the importance of having support that allows artists to grow freely, experiment confidently and embrace opportunities beyond the expectations often placed on them.
