Rebecca Malope bags R1 million after detergent brand uses her image without permission

Gospel music legend Rebecca Malope has reportedly walked away with a cool R1 million after settling a legal battle with Procter & Gamble South Africa over the unauthorised use of her image.

The dispute stems from her past partnership with the company as the face of Ariel washing powder, a deal that began in 2016.

Although the initial contract expired years ago, the brand allegedly continued using her face on their packaging long after the agreement ended.

Despite repeated renewals, the deal officially concluded in September 2022.

However, Rebecca’s image remained on products until as recently as 2025, prompting her to file a lawsuit at the Pretoria High Court in April 2025.

What was once a smooth business relationship took a sour turn.

“All we asked was to address the fact that I haven’t been paid, despite my image being used for the past couple of years,” Malope told City Press.

“Instead of working with us to resolve it, they were just not cooperative. That’s what’s most disappointing and hurtful.”

She described the ordeal as stressful, particularly because of her long-standing reputation in the industry.

“I’ve been working in this industry for over 36 years. People know that I carry myself with integrity. I take my work seriously. I’m a professional and I absolutely love what I do.”

The out-of-court settlement has now put the matter to rest, with Rebecca getting the compensation she demanded.
