South African hip hop artist HEAVY GPARK is making a bold statement with his latest release, Same Place, a track that dives into life on the Cape Flats while challenging the assumptions often placed on its youth. Now out alongside its official music video, the release presents a grounded portrayal of everyday realities, reflecting both the environment and mindset shaping young people in the area.
Opening with a cinematic clip from a viral Tik Tok video, the track tells the story of a group of coloured boys wrongly judged by security for wearing silver Kruger coin chains. OG Carlo steps in to defend them, setting the stage for HEAVY GPARK’s sharp commentary on perception, identity, and ambition.
The song’s standout line, “Pull up in a bakkie I’m not junky funky,” speaks directly to the stereotypes the artist seeks to dismantle, turning everyday assumptions into a platform for empowerment and self-expression.
The music video captures Cape Town’s streets and culture in a visually striking way. Scenes were filmed at Unwanted Kicks Store, a legendary sneaker store on the city’s south side, and at the historic Luxurama Theatre, a cultural landmark that has hosted iconic productions including District Six, Joe Barber, and Kinners Vannie Ses.
