South African Amapiano artists dominated the Piano People stage at Afro Nation 2026, held at Praia da Rocha Beach in Portimão, Portugal, where the festival continued its focus on Afrobeats, Amapiano, hip hop, and wider African music culture across multiple days of performances.
Afro Nation 2026 ran from 3 to 5 July and featured several curated stages, with the Piano People stage dedicated specifically to Amapiano. The Piano People stage, dedicated entirely to Amapiano, operated as one of the most active spaces within the festival. Running on a tightly packed schedule of DJ sets and live performances, the stage reflected the genre’s current structure, where producers, vocalists and DJs move fluidly between solo sets and collaborative moments without long pauses between acts.
Kelvin Momo, Focalistic, DJ Maphorisa and Uncle Waffles headlined the stage, each bringing a distinct interpretation of Amapiano’s sound.
The wider lineup stretched the stage’s sound across different directions of the genre. Scotts Maphuma, Zee Nxumalo, LeeMcKrazy, Nkosazana Daughter, Amaroto, Njelic, Mellow & Sleazy, Skylaa Tylaa and Royal Musiq were among the artists who appeared across the programme. Their performances shifted between vocal-heavy compositions, log drum-centred productions and collaborative DJ appearances that have become a defining feature of Amapiano’s live format.

Across the three days, the Piano People stage maintained a continuous performance cycle, with minimal downtime between sets. DJs transitioned directly into one another’s selections, often extending or blending tracks in real time, which kept the sound uninterrupted and the energy consistent from afternoon into night sessions.

The beachfront crowd remained tightly packed throughout the performances, reacting visibly to changes in tempo, basslines and familiar tracks. Movement within the audience reflected the shifts in sound, with moments of heightened energy during widely recognised songs circulating across streaming platforms and social media.
Afro Nation 2026 reinforced its position as a major international platform for African music, while the Piano People stage stood out as a focused space for Amapiano’s expanding global presence, bringing South African artists into direct conversation with an international festival audience.
